About Our Pastor

REVEREND HENRY K. SMITH JR., B.A., M.A.
A native of Nashville, Tennessee, Rev. Henry K. Smith Jr., received his B.A. and M.A. degrees at Emmanuel Bible Seminary and College. He further matriculated at the American Baptist Seminary and College and Vanderbilt University.

Reverend Smith is the former pastor of First Baptist Church, West Nashville, having served that congregation for over eighteen years. During the illness of Rev. Thomas E. Sweeney, Sr., pastor of First Baptist Church South Inglewood, Reverend Smith served faithfully as Assistant Pastor. After the death of Rev. Sweeney in 1996, Rev. Smith was called to be pastor of the congregation. He was installed as pastor on Sunday, December 1, 1996.

Reverend Smith recognizes that God's work will often take His workers beyond the walls of his sanctuary. As a result, he served as an editor and contributor of the National Baptist Publishing Board, Staff Minister of the Criminal Justice Center of Nashville, Instructor for the State Sunday School and BTU Congress and instructor at the Midwest Missionary Regional Conference of the National Baptist Convention of America. He has also served as a member of the Advisory Committee of the Advisory Committee of the National Baptist Convention. Additionally, he holds memberships in the Interdenominational Ministers Fellowship of Nashville, Tennessee Missionary Baptist State Convention and National Missionary Baptist Convention of America. He has also been a vocal community advocate in the Concerned Citizens of the Community for both West Nashville and the South Inglewood community groups.

Through his strong leadership, First Baptist South Inglewood is actively at the forefront of addressing the needs of God's people in the 21st Century. Many new ministries reflecting his innovative ideas and totalistic approach to saving of souls have been added to the church. They include the Drama Ministry, Caring and Sharing Committee, the FBSI Book Club, the Adult Christian Training School, and most recently, Trinity Community Service, which is a non-profit organization established to provide service to the Nashville area in a variety of ways. He was recently elected to serve as Vice President of the Home Mission Board, National Missionary Baptist Convention of America.

On a personal note, God blessed him with a life partner in Mrs. Vernella K. Smith. They are the proud parents of seven children.
